Here's a virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading his exquisite inspirational poem "Miracles" from his lifelong masterpiece "Leaves of Grass" first published around 1900 that gave vent to every thought this great man and thinker had on all aspects of life as he saw it.. This poem is a celebration of the small things in life that we all take for granted.Things as simple as a walk through the streets of our city or town particularly when in later life as Whitman was when he wrote this poem in old age and being able to walk anywhere was both a struggle and something to be celebrated for as long as it was still possible or our taking time to observe an insect in flight these are the really important miracles. "The best things in Life are free", is the message of this poem. Real miracles are right in front of us every minute of every day, and something we really we can savor if we would only stop for a minute to realize it.

Walter Whitman (May 31, 1819 -- March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist, journalist, and humanist. He was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. Born on Long Island, Whitman worked as a journalist, a teacher, a government clerk, and a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War in addition to publishing his poetry. Early in his career, he also produced a temperance novel, Franklin Evans (1842). Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass, was first published in 1855 with his own money. The work was an attempt at reaching out to the common person with an American epic. He continued expanding and revising it until his death in 1892. After a stroke towards the end of his life, he moved to Camden, New Jersey where his health further declined. He died at age 72 and his funeral became a public spectacle
